The Cause: Post Elementary Public School Education for the Children of Bangka, Indonesia.
Bangka, indonesia: like many islands in Southeast Asia, it is rich in beauty, and in resources. Being one of the world’s largest producers of tin, it also is a major producer of white pepper and cloves. And, while this may seem positive on the surface, the impact of years of tin mining, both legal and illegal, has caused considerable damage to the island, leaving gaping holes where there once was jungle canopy, and a population that has been exploited every bit as much as its resources. And, as is typically the case, one of the most ignored resources of the island are its children.
As is the case in so many areas of the world, public education on the island of Bangka is sorely lacking. Most of its children receive some basic, grade school level education but beyond that, opportunities to attend middle or high school are severely limited. And, needless to say, very few of the island’s kids will ever have much of a chance to go to college, promoting a constant state of poverty in the island with no real chance for improvement. Having achieved only a basic level of education, most of Bangka’s children are left with few options to earn a living beyond agriculture or fishing, both of which is performed in very crude fashion and neither of which allow for anything above a poverty level of existence. The reality is that, at some point in most of Bangka’s children’s lives, a harsh realization of their future sets in and they lose the one thing that that is so badly needed: hope. Fortunately, we are in a position to help.
On our last trip to Indonesia, we learned of a desire to build a middle and high school that would provide education for some of Bangka’s children, at no cost to their families. This will give kids a chance to go attend college, allowing them a greater chance to improve their living situation, thus impacting the Island’s economic outlook. Land for this project has already been secured and we are in constant communication with people who have a high level of political influence, both on a local and a national level. It’s not going to be easy, and there are significant hurdles to clear, but it’s highly possible. And the best part is, to be a part of bettering the lives of these children and their community, all you need to do is purchase LDA — again a portion of every single sale goes directly towards helping somebody, in this case, the children on the island of Bangka.

All LDA products are being manufactured in collaboration with the people of Indonesia. Our inaugural product line is scheduled for release in late spring 2017. Together we want to build a junior high school and then a high school for the children on the island of Bangka, Indonesia.
